Will sMaRTcaPs work with ALL of my programs?
sMaRTcaPs works with all programs written to the 32-bit and 64-bit Windows specification = programs written for Windows 95 or later.
Phoebus LLC also distributes an application that will work for your DOS programs, and it's available free of charge to our registered users. Please email Sales@PhoebusLLC.com for more information.
Unfortunately, sMaRTcaPs does NOT work with programs written for earlier versions (16 bit) of Windows (Windows 1, Windows 2, Windows 3, or Windows for Workgroups) or Macs.

Can I change it so that sMaRTcaPs only lets me know when the Caps Lock (or Num Lock or Insert) state changes - rather than every time I touch the key?
Yes. With version 3.0 and later, you may click the option "Play Sound Only When Caps (or Num or Insert) Changes" so that there is a check mark in the box just to the left of the text. (See How do I access the sMaRTcaPs menu? )
Here's a sample showing the Caps Lock Options:

Why doesn't sMaRTcaPs provide either a audible or visual indication for the Insert key like it does for the Caps Lock and Num Lock Keys? Why is there only a "Insert Key" or "Insert Changed" announcement?
Unfortunately, the Insert key is not a toggle key and the state of the Insert mode is not universal. That means that not all programs support the Insert key; and for those that do, you may be in Insert mode in one program while being in Overwrite mode in another program at the same time.

How does this trial period work?
You should only buy software that suits your needs and your pocketbook. The Internet distribution of sMaRTcaPs allows you to "try it before you buy it". And because the overhead is lower with Internet distribution, the prices are also lower.
When sMaRTcaPs is downloaded from the Internet, you are getting the same exact program as the CD and diskette versions. However, there are 2 additional features:
1) sMaRTcaPs downloaded from the Internet has a maximum trial period of 30 days and requires registration after that period. The program will cease to function in any meaningful way after the trial period has elapsed. You may then either purchase the registration to make sMaRTcaPs work again - permanently - or uninstall sMaRTcaPs (See How do I uninstall sMaRTcaPs?).
2) Whenever sMaRTcaPs is started, there will be a notice to remind you to how many days are left in your trial period. This notice requires a confirmation click. There are, of course, no notices with a paid registration.
With a paid registration, Phoebus LLC gives you the right to continue using the software, free technical support, and free updates!

Can I change the default sounds?
Yes! You may assign whatever sound file (files with the extension ".wav") you like to each event (Caps On, Caps Off, Num On, Num Off, Insert Key, Insert Changed ). They are accessible using Windows' built in capabilities. Click on the Start button » slide up to Settings » slide over to and click on Control Panel » then click on Sounds. There is a list of events under the heading sMaRTcaPs. With each event, there is an associated sound file that you may change by entering the name of the new one, or browsing to your chosen file. Your computer already has several of these files installed in various locations; you may download files from the Internet; and you may even make your own sound files using a program like the Windows Sound Recorder. If you find or create a file you particularly like, please share it with us.
